Nutrition for Body and Soul

The Typical American Diet is Killing Us!!!

Only YOU can take charge of your health!

Thank you Dr. Plant School of Natural Health and Wellness for this awareness!!

The typical American diet is killing us:
These two graphs sum it up.
Point 1: We are outsourcing our diet, and therefore our health, to the fast food, restaurant and school systems.
Point 2: Because we are outsourcing our health to industries that are more intrigued to their bottom line than our health we are being force fed a silk scarf poison…(it may taste and feel good, but it is slowly entangling us and killing us).
We need to embrace the ‪#‎NaturalHealthRevolution‬ and take back control of our lives. There is no greater flag in this revolution than the miracle botanical of Moringa oleifera, the most nutrient potent botanical on earth. Be sure to dial into the monumental call on Nov. 24 to learn more about this botanical.
Let’s commit to change. Let’s commit to a new lifestyle. Let’s commit to the Natural Health Revolution and taking back control  of our lives!

Nourish Your Mind

Thank you Dr. Plant School of Natural Health and Wellness for this info!!!!

Nourish Your Mind: By Dr. Plant.

While in graduate school I became fascinated with the idea of supplementing the mind both for cognitive performance and preservation.

Though there are few long term studies done of specific herbs and supplements with respect to long term cognitive performance, there is overwhelming evidence on the importance of a healthy diet and exercise in contributing to a person’s mental capability and health.

For example, the picture shows an individuals brain activity walking vs. sedentary. As you can see, exercise not only engages our muscles, but also our mind. Exercise builds strong muscles and a strong mind.

10151313_1688074908145424_3789935437651298194_n

Additionally, people who eat a diet rich in essential fatty acids, little to no red meat, and a plethora of antioxidants appear to have better long term cognitive health. Look for fruits and vegetables enriched in essential fatty acids and antioxidants such as Moringa Oleifera and Avocados.

Furthermore, studies have shown individuals who supplement with essential oils perform better in memory. A study was done that showed diffusing peppermint essential oils helps individuals perform on tests vs. those not exposed to peppermint essential oil.

So the solution is: Exercise, Eat Right and Supplement Naturally.

What is Moringa Oleifera?

Thank you Dr. Plant School of Natural Health and Wellness for this awesome information!

What is Moringa Oleifera?

Unknown-3 Unknown-2

Moringa oleifera is most nutritious species of the 13 species of the Moringa family, and has earned the honor of being the most nutritiously dense botanical on earth (values listed in appendix A). This botanical has been honored by nearly 100 cultures over time, and because of such has been referred to by more than 60 different names. Moringa oleifera can be an exceptional source of nutrition for all ages and has been endorsed by numerous institutions for daily consumption, and as a mechanism for treating malnutrition; these institutions include Trees for Life Research and the World Health Organization (WHO). The scientific community has recognized Moringa oleifera as the most nutritiously dense botanical for the sheer value and diversity of nutrients, for example:

Dried Moringa leaves contain:
• 10x Vitamin A of Carrots
• 17x Calcium of milk
• 15x Potassium of Bananas
• 25x Iron of Spinach
• 9x Protein of Yogurt

Furthermore, numerous institutions have validated the nutritional value and mechanism of drying the leaves for optimal nutritional enrichment and value. These practices include shade drying the leaves indoors, in moderately controlled temperatures, and away from direct sunlight. The process takes anywhere from 3-10 days to complete depending on humidity.

The health and wellness benefits of Moringa oleifera are carried beyond its nutritional benefit. As Balbir Mathur, President of Trees of Life Research states:

“In a remote village of eastern India, I was approached by an old and dignified practitioner of traditional medicine. He had learned that Trees for Life was helping villagers plant fruit trees, and he had traveled more than a hundred miles to meet me. As we talked, he made an outrageous claim: “The leaves of the Moringa tree prevent 300 diseases.””

What the Heck are Prebiotics…and Are You Getting Enough?

Thank you Dr. Plant School of Natural Health and Wellness for this info!!!

Prebiotics: What are they, and are you getting enough?
There are 10x as many bacteria cells living in our gut than make up our body. That means approximately 700,000,000,000 bacterial cells live in our gut.
Numerous studies are beginning to unlock the complex mystery of how our bodies have created a symbiotic relationship with these bacteria. Sadly, with the influx of antibiotics readily prescribed and forced into our food chain these good gut bacteria are often collateral damage. This in turn can create a greater problem than the initial infection may have ever caused.
For example, these intestinal bacteria have been shown to be important with:
– Immune System: It is thought that the first, and strongest line of defense from bacterial infections (bad bacteria) comes from the good bacteria living in our bodies.
– Emotional Health: Several studies have shown that the intestinal bacteria are important to stimulate serotonin, the neurochemical involved in feelings of happiness and confidence.
– Metabolism: In a recent study intestinal flora taken from normal weight mice was removed and placed into overweight mice. The overweight mice lost weight, suggesting that intestinal flora are involved in regulating our metabolism.
– Nutrient absorption: The intestinal bacteria are critical in the preparation and priming of nutrients to be absorbed in our body.
So how do we nourish these important intestinal bacteria?
The answer is with prebiotics. Prebiotics are nutrients that are body can’t absorb, but the intestinal bacteria can and need to grow. So when we consume prebiotics we are nourishing the bacteria that are body is so dependent on for living a long healthy life.
Foods naturally enriched in prebiotics:
Moringa oleifera
-Chicory root
-Asparagus
-Cabbage
-Legumes
-Leeks

INTRODUCING MORINGA!!!

Moringa is now more famous than ever in many parts of the world, and that fame is igniting exciting research projects in agriculture, forestry, botany, food and drug industries, health and cosmetics.

The following is out of the book “Moringa, an Introduction! by Monica Marcu, a clinical pharmacologist. To order this book go to www.Moringaeducation.com

IMG_0885

As stated in the book….

I would like to warmly introduce to you Moringa oleifera, the most studied of 13 species of Moringa trees.  Moringa o. is a fast-growing shrub or slender tree that can reach 12m (36 ft.) in height at maturity and can live for up to 20 years.  A short but intense life,…it is one of the fastest-growing trees as it can reach 3m (9 ft.) in just 10 months after it is planted.  Moringa is a “compassionate” ideal tree for agroforestry since its branches can be easily trimmed to regulate shade, and the open crown allows the sunlight to reach the garden vegetables below.  Moringa produces beautiful cream-colored, sweet-smelling flowers, great for teas or as a honey source.  The pods (triangular, 30 to 50cm long) host the black, winged seeds.  Of all the Moringa parts, the bark is the only on that can be toxic for human consumption and it should be avoided.  The other parts (green or dried leaves, buds, pods, seeds and seed oil, flowers) are edible raw or cooked, and are packed with exceptionally valuable nutrients for humans and animals.  Around the would, Moringa is getting better and better known for its many attributes and uses, wide adaptability and ease of growth.  The number of scientific studies and publications is growing at a fast pace, while anecdotal evidence about Moringa’s health benefits are abounding!

Unknown-4 Unknown-5

However, not all Moringa is created equal!….

Thank you Dr. Plant for all of your caring and knowledge!

There are five key points that are critical in ensuring the highest possible quality of Moringa.
1) Species:
There are 13 different species of the Moringa genus, each specie differs widely in it’s nutritional content and value. Moringa oleifera, is claimed to be the most nutritiously dense through numerous scientific publications.
2) Sourcing:
Additionally to Moringa oleifera being the most nutritiously dense of all the Moringa genus, Moringa oleifera’s nutritional value also depends on where it is grown, and when it is harvested. Several studies, including thesis work from prominent universities has shown this. Look for a company that sources their Moringa oleifera from India near the base of the Himalayas, numerous data points to this as the ideal location for maximizing Moringa’s nutritional impact.
3) Preparation:
There are several ways in preparing Moringa oleifera for consumption. The most nutritiously advantageous way is to shade dry the moringa leaves, this helps to naturally preserve and enrich for Moringa’s inherent nutrition. The second, and much more common way, is to dry the moringa in the sun. Though cheaper and quicker the ultra-violet radiation from the sun can crosslink the nutrients rendering them inert for physiological benefit.
4) Blend:
Moringa oleifera is a tree, and with that the nutritional power of the Moringa’s nutrition is found in different parts of the tree. For example, the leaves are enriched in amino acids, while the seeds are enriched in the essential fatty acids, and finally the fruit contains the powerful minerals critical for cell to cell communication. To maximize the nutritional power of Moringa oleifera, one must look to these three components.
5) Manufacturing:
Manufacturing can create havoc on natural products. It is often in this step that many natural botanicals loose their effectiveness. To overcome these challenges one must look to a company whose manufacturing is NSF certified, thereby giving greater confidence that they are adhering to practices that allow for quality found throughout the manufacturing process.

Battle the Dreaded Acid Reflux!!!

You Don’t Need a Drug to Banish Acid Reflux

The answer to gastric problems like ulcers and acid indigestion is to restore your natural gastric balance and function. Not only is it useful for optimal gut function but it is crucial for your long-term health, as your gut flora can increase your absorption of nutrients, and play a significant role in mental and physical health. It is very clear from reviewing the literature that you can’t be healthy until your gut flora is optimized. That is one of the ways eating sugars harm you—they push your gut flora balance in the wrong direction.

Switching from processed foods to whole foods is therefore step number one. To further optimize your gut health, you’ll want to make sure you’re consuming enough good bacteria from traditionally fermented foods, such as fermented vegetables, or in a probiotic supplement. This will help balance your bowel flora, which can help eliminate Helicobacter bacteria naturally. If you have heartburn, acid reflux, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, or any acid-related condition, the strategies listed above may also offer relief.  Read more

Make sure to take a good Probiotic supplement….

Probiotic or beneficial (“good”) intestinal bacteria promote health, discourage the growth of disease-causing (“bad”) bacteria and pathogenic fungi, and improve the balance of microbes which normally inhabit our intestines. Many beneficial bacteria transform naturally occurring sugars, especially lactose, into lactic acid, promoting a more balanced and stable intestinal environment. As one of the most abundant sources of lactose is milk, these beneficial bacteria have been used for thousands of years to produce yogurt, cheese, and fermented milks. Both science and folklore support healthful roles for these foods. GNLD’s supplement of beneficial bacteria, Acidophilus Plus, combines potency with technology to guarantee that live organisms survive the stomach acid and reach the intestines to deliver five billion viable organisms capable of supporting optimal digestive tract function.

Intestinal lactobacilli aid normal digestive functions and promote healthy immune system responses.*
Broad spectrum: Provides beneficial probiotic lactobacilli in the forms of L. acidophilus, L. bulgaricus, L. casei, B. bifidum and S. thermophilus.

Targeted-Delivery Technology: Exclusive Gel-Gard protection system assures that bacteria are protected from stomach acid and the maximum number are delivered to the intestines where they’re needed.

Potency guaranteed: 5 billion organisms sealed in every capsule.

Whole-food-based: Contains beneficial bacteria isolated from cultured dairy foods.

Concentrated: As many beneficial bacteria as 10 servings of yogurt or 5 servings of acidophilus milk.

Risk-free for the lactose intolerant.

Also…Prebiotics are very important!  What’s the difference??

Question: What are probiotics and prebiotics? How can I benefit from consuming them?

Answer: Probiotics are “good” bacteria that help keep your digestive system healthy by controlling growth of harmful bacteria. Prebiotics are carbohydrates that cannot be digested by the human body. They are food for probiotics. The primary benefit of probiotics and prebiotics appears to be helping you maintain a healthy digestive system.

Question: What foods are good sources of probiotics?

Answer: One of the best sources of probiotics is yogurt. It has good bacteria like lactobacillus or bifidobacteria. Look for “live or active cultures” on the label to be sure your favorite brand of yogurt is a rich source of probiotics. Other good food sources are sauerkraut, miso soup, fermented, soft cheeses (like Gouda), and even sourdough bread. The common feature of all these foods is fermentation, a process that produces probiotics.

Question: What foods are good sources of prebiotics?

Answer: To help maintain healthy level of prebiotics, you can feed them with the foods you eat. Foods rich in prebiotics include asparagus, Jerusalem artichokes, bananas, oatmeal, and legumes.

Question: What foods, if any, have both prebiotics and probiotics in them?

Answer: The types of foods that contain probiotics and prebiotics are very different. Therefore, there is no food that contains both. However, you can find supplements that contain probiotics and prebiotics.

Question: Can consuming probiotics help prevent yeast infections?

Answer: There is some evidence that eating yogurt may help prevent vaginal yeast infections. Some doctors recommend this to help prevent infections in women who have them frequently.

Question: Can adding prebiotics to my diet replace the meds I have to take for my Crohn’s disease?

Answer: No, probiotics or prebiotics are not an appropriate replacement for your medications. You should not stop taking your medications without talking to your doctor. This could lead to an increase in symptoms and complications. There is some evidence that probiotics may be helpful for people with Crohn’s disease, but the research is very preliminary. Plus, some medical evidence questions their usefulness. If you’re interested in trying probiotics or prebiotics, talk to your doctor about how to safely incorporate them into your diet.

I love Zia’s SmartMix…not only does it contain Prebiotics, but has Moringa to boot!!

SMARTMIX Shake things up with Zija’s SmartMix. Add this easy-to-open packet to water for a dose of Moringa nutrition and prebiotic benefits. It’s easier than ever to Drink Life In—even on the go! With the evolution of the modern diet, it has become more and more difficult to consume the nutrients that we need to thrive. Our body is full of toxins and our digestion has been affected by an overabundance of processed foods and beverages. Our health is dependent not only on the nutrition that we consume overall, but also on the amount that our gut flora receives. This flora is comprised of many different microbes, each with its own unique environment, depending on what it is exposed to. Our flora is critical in strengthening our immune system, digesting foods efficiently, increasing nutrient absorption, maintaining a healthy weight, and obtaining increased energy levels. Prebiotics are an important tool in helping regulate our body’s flora. Supplementing a diet with prebiotics has been shown to increase the level of certain microbes, which in turn regulates metabolism and allows for better communication between different organs. The end result is enhanced system-wide health. In addition to its strong Moringa foundation, SmartMix also delivers prebiotics and other benefits through the following natural botanicals: Chicory Root Extract Derived from the herbaceous chicory plant, chicory root contains inulin, a prebiotic that stimulates healthy digestive function. Chicory root also provides a feeling of fullness without adding extra calories. Similar to Moringa itself, chicory root helps maintain blood sugar levels. FoTi Root Extract This botanical has been used for thousands of years in Chinese medicine to increase vitality and mood. It also helps remove toxins from the body. Additionally, FoTi root is often used in hair and skin beauty products. SmartMix Suggested Use Add one serving (1 packet) of SmartMix to 8-18 ounces of cold water, shake well, and Drink Life In every day.

The Tree of Life!!

I know I have posted on Moringa Oleifera before, but it is so worth repeating! This amazing botanical superfood has more benefits than you even know!  I am so glad that I have made Moringa a part of my daily health routine!  And, I am so glad to have those that I love including it in theirs!

IMG_0103 (1)

The moringa tree is often referred to by its advocates as the ‘tree of life’ due to its seemingly miraculous nutritional benefits and sheer versatility. This unassuming, curiously shaped tree is grown as a landscape tree and food source in many parts of the world – although its use as a type of vegetable and nutritive food first developed in countries such as Africa, the Himalayas, China, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. This hardy plant grows in a wide variety of soils ranging from sandy, loamy, and even clayish soils and is resistant to drought and is fast-growing. Due to its hardiness, moringa can be found growing in different climates, and with its adaptability (with the exception that it does not tolerate frost very well), the trees are easily grown and cultivated with very little to no maintenance required. – See more at: http://www.herbs-info.com/moringa.html#sthash.QtMXiNdY.dpuf
